The same code stuck on a product is traceability, at the counter it's payment, printed on a badge it's check-in — the medium never changes; the context creates the value.

1. Event Check-In and Ticket Validation

Send a unique QR code on registration; scan at the door and check-in takes two seconds — compare that with the queue for manual list-checking, and it's the first impression of your event experience. 2. Member Identification and Loyalty Points

Four Practical Rules for Designing Scan Interactions

  1. The first screen after the scan decides everything. Scanning is an impulse; if the landing page takes over three seconds to load or leads with a sign-up form, the person is gone. The post-scan page must be light and go straight to the point.
  2. Leave the code an escape hatch. A code printed on a physical object can't be changed, so the URL inside it should point to a short link or redirect service you control, so the destination can change later. Print the final URL directly, and the day you restructure the site you'll be sighing at ten thousand printed flyers.
  3. Test size and contrast. The farther the scanning distance, the bigger the code must be; some cameras can't read a white-on-dark inverted code. Testing with a few different phones before the print run is the cheapest QA you'll ever do.
  4. Leave a path for people who can't scan. Always print a short URL next to the code — a broken camera, dim lighting, or an elder who doesn't scan still has a way in.
A QR code's cost approaches zero, so the real design question was never "should we use one" — it's "once they scan, are you ready to catch them?"
