Does a Café With an Instagram Account Still Need a Website?

"We already have an Instagram — do we still need a website?" It's the question small-shop owners ask us most, and the honest answer is: not necessarily. If your café lives on walk-ins and social reach, your menu changes every three months, and you don't need e-commerce or reservations, a well-run IG account plus a Google Business Profile can genuinely carry you a long way. But "may not need a website" is not the same as "needs no digital setup" — what most cafés lack isn't a pretty website, it's a minimal but complete path to being found, understood, and remembered.

Where Instagram Hits Its Ceiling

IG is great at atmosphere, but there are three things it does badly:

  • It doesn't show up in search: when customers Google "your café name menu" or "your café name hours," IG content barely appears in results — and when it does, it rarely leads to the answer.
  • Information sinks: the menu, minimum spend, whether pets are allowed, whether there are power outlets — the questions you get asked to death are scattered across thirty posts and story highlights. Customers can't find them, so you keep answering the same DMs.
  • The account isn't yours: reach is at the algorithm's mercy, and locked or hijacked accounts are hardly news. Everything you've built on the platform can't be moved out.

The Minimal Digital Setup for a Small Shop

Layer one: Google Business Profile (free — do this first)

For a search like "Xingtian Temple café," the winner isn't a website — it's map ranking. Complete photos (storefront, interior, signature items), hours kept current, every review answered — these zero-cost moves are the highest-ROI exposure a small shop can get. We cover the details in our guide to optimizing your Google Business Profile.

Layer two: a one-page website plus a web-based menu

A small shop's website doesn't need five or ten pages. One page says it all: who you are, what your signature items are, the menu, location and hours, FAQs, and links to IG and LINE. The menu page is the soul of it — lay it out as web text, not an image file or a PDF: search engines can then read "pour-over single origin Zhongshan District," customers don't have to pinch-zoom on their phones, and a price change takes you three minutes. Put "are there outlets," "what's the minimum spend," and "can I book a table" into the FAQs and your DM volume will visibly drop.

Layer three: add-ons as needed

Selling beans and desserts to go? Add a simple shop function or a pre-order form. Seats always full? Hook up a reservation tool. Want to keep regulars close? Collect a list with a LINE Official Account. All of these should wait until the first two layers are solid and the need is real — don't buy the full package on day one.

IG makes people fall for you; the website gives them answers. A small shop needs both — but only at exactly the right size.

Common Mistakes

  1. Building a site that's all image, zero information: full-bleed photos and poetic copy, but the menu, hours, and address take forever to find. A small shop's website is a tool, not a portfolio piece.
  2. Never updating after launch: the holiday closure goes out as an IG story while the website still shows the old hours. The customer who made the wasted trip blames the shop, not IG. The update workflow has to be simple enough that the owner can do it in ten minutes.
  3. Saving money with a free platform and not even owning your domain: a domain costs a few hundred NT dollars a year and is the foundation of every digital asset you have — move platforms or change tools and none of your links break.

Budget and Timeline, Roughly

At this scale, the point is to keep scope small: a one-page site with a menu page, built from a template, can be done for tens of thousands of NT dollars and launched in two to four weeks; custom design with real brand identity moves the budget up a tier. The deciding factor is your brand premium — if your café sells atmosphere and craft, the design quality of your website is part of the product and worth investing in; if you sell neighborhood everyday, getting the information right matters more than making it beautiful.
